A Glossary of Christmas Terms

 

Advent calendar
A calendar used to count or celebrate the days in anticipation of Christmas.
 
Angel
A spiritual being acting as a messenger of God. Angel figurines are also popular as tree toppers.
 
Angel Hair
Angel Hair was a popular Victorian Christmas decoration. It looks like cobwebs or shredded tinsel and is used for Christmas decorations and tree trimming.
 
Bauble
A bauble is a spherical decoration that is commonly used to adorn Christmas trees.
 
Bauble hooks
Ideal for hanging baubles, decorations or ornaments on your Christmas tree
 
Bon bon
A decorated paper tube that breaks and makes a loud noise when two people pull firmly at either end of it. Breaking it open generally releases a small toy or novelty item, joke and paper hat. Also known as a cracker.
 
Candy Cane
A candy cane is a cane-shaped hard candy stick associated with Christmas. It is traditionally white with red stripes and flavoured with peppermint; but is also made in a variety of other flavours and colors
 
Centerpiece
A decoration placed at the centre of the Christmas table, often features evergreen foliage, pine cones and poinsettia.
 
Cinnamon
Traditionally used in many Christmas recipes also used as a fragrance in candles and potpourri.
 
Christmas Elf
The Christmas elf lives with Santa Claus in the North Pole and acts as his helper. Christmas elves are often depicted in green or red clothing with pointy ears, long noses, and pointy hats. Santa's elves are often said to make the toys in Santa's workshop and take care of his reindeer.
 
Christmas Village
A Christmas village is a decorative, miniature-scale village often set up during the Christmas season.
 
Cracker

Fairy Lights
Small electric lights on a string used as decoration, especially on trees at Christmas
 
Fibre optic
Is a flexible, transparent fiber made of high quality extruded glass (silica) or plastic. Used in many illuminated Christmas decorations including Christmas trees.
 
Fir
The fir is a species of evergreen coniferous tree. Christmas trees are traditionally spruce, pine or fir.
 
Flocked
Flocking refers to the process of covering Christmas trees with artificial snow to create a magical wintry effect.
 
Frankincense
A gum used for incense, one of the gifts the three wise man gave to baby Jesus
 
Garland
A length of evergreen foliage which can be decorated often displayed on a mantelpiece or staircase.
 
Gingerbread
Gingerbread is a sweet food-product flavoured with ginger and typically using honey or molasses (treacle) rather than just sugar. German style gingerbread houses covered in icing and sweets are popular at Christmas.
 
Glitter
A light-reflecting, decorative, metallic material, cut into very small pieces. Used in many Christmas decorations and craft projects.
 
Ham bag
This is a purpose-made calico or muslin bag, used for storing ham.
 
Hinged Christmas tree
A Christmas tree with branches that are already attached to the central pole and fold out for quick assembly. Also very quick and easy to to dismantle.
 
Holly
An evergreen plant with prickly dark green leaves and red berries.
 
Hook Christmas tree
A Christmas tree with individual branches that are hooked on to a central pole. The branches and pole are usually colour co-ordinated or alphabeticalized to simplify in tree construction.
 
Icicle Lights
Icicle lights are fairy lights, created in the shape of icicles. They look best outside the house hanging from eaves or guttering.
 
Kris kringle
A tradition where members of a group or community are randomly assigned one other person to whom they anonymously give a gift. Often practiced in workplaces or amongst large families. Also known as Secret Santa.
 
Lametta
Lametta is a foil Christmas decoration found in homes and in particular on Christmas trees. Similar to tinsel, it is hung over the branches to mimic icicles
 
LED Lights
LED stands for 'Light Emitting Diode' and is the latest technology in energy efficient / low voltage lighting
 
Magi
A reference to the three wise men from the East who brought gifts for the baby Jesus.
 
Manger
Jesus was put in a manager after being born, a small wooden trough filled with hay for feeding animals.
 
Mistletoe
A parasitic plant found in Europe with evergreen leaves and white berries. Mistletoe is often hung from a doorway between two rooms. It is customary to give a kiss to anyone found to be standing under the mistletoe.
 
Myrrh
A gum used for perfume or incense, one of the gifts that the three wise men gave to baby Jesus
 
Nativity scene
A scene depicting Jesus’ birth. The scene generally includes Joseph and Mary in a stable with shepherds, magi (wise men) animals and gifts. The scene may also include angels and a star above the stable.
 
Net lights
Network of evenly spaced fairy lights are a quick and efficient way to decorate bushes, shrubs and trees.
 
Pencil pine
A pencil pine Christmas tree is a slimline tree suitable for small rooms or apartments.
 
Pine
Pines are evergreen coniferous trees, commercially grown and harvested for use as Christmas trees.
 
Poinsettia
This red-leaved plant is commonly used as a decoration at Christmas. Also known as the Christmas Star or Christmas Flower.
 
Pudding cloth
Traditionally, English Christmas puddings was boiled in muslin pudding cloths.
 
Reindeer
A deer from the arctic and sub-arctic, famous for pulling the sleigh with which Santa delivers presents. The most famous reindeer is Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
 
Ropelight
A string of small, low-voltage lights inside a clear or colored transparent plastic tube run by a controller.

Sateen
A fabric constructed using a satin-weave structure, to give a lustrous surface. However in contrast to satin it is generally made with cotton thread.
 
Secret Santa
A tradition where members of a group or community are randomly assigned one other person to whom they anonymously give a gift. Often practiced in workplaces or amongst large families. Also known as Kris Kringle.
 
Silhouette Lights
Double sided PVC shape with lights inside to illuminate the scene.
 
Sleigh
A light cart on runners that is used to carry people over snow and ice. Often pulled by horses, or in Santa's case by reindeer.
 
Snow spray
A spray that creates artificial snow fall for decoration purposes. Can be used on trees, wreaths or other decorations. Can also be used with a stencil to create white Christmas images on windows or mirrors.
 
Snowglobes
A snow globe is a transparent sphere, generally made of glass and filled with water and small white or glittery particles to imitate snow. The interior may feature diverse scenes, from the typical 'holiday souvenir' scene to Christmas scenes. To activate the snow, the globe is shaken or inverted to churn up the 'snow' inside.
 
Shatterproof baubles
A bauble which is designed to resist shattering or splintering.
 
Spruce
An evergreen coniferous tree and a popular ornamental tree used extensively at Christmas.
 
Star Burst
Also called a tinsel fountain. This beautiful foil decoration can be hung from the ceiling to create an impressive display.
 
Stencil
A sheet of light card or plastic with images (eg Christmas images) cut away. Can be used in conjunction with spray snow to decorate windows or mirrors.
 
Stocking
A large sock-shaped item. Generally hung from a fireplace, mantel or door handle, ready for Santa to fill with small presents to be opened on Christmas morning
 
Swag
Suspended evergreen branches which are tapered at each end and wider in the middle. Often used to decorate a mantelpiece.
 
Tinsel
A material with a metallic appearance that is produced in strips or sheets to be used for decoration.
 
Tree skirt
Both practical and decorative, a tree skirt hides an unsightly tree base and provides a decorative backdrop for gifts.
 
Tree toppers
A tree topper is a decoration that is placed on the top of a Christmas tree. Traditionally, two of the most popular types are stars and angels.

Wreath
A (generally circular) band of foliage, usually decorated further with small berries, ribbons or other decorations. Often displayed hanging on the front door of a house. Also available in other shapes such as oval and square
